LSU’s Brian Kelly played Alabama and Florida State, chimes in on CFP debate

LSU coach Brian Kelly has a unique perspective on this whole Alabama-Florida State thing.

On Sunday, the College Football Playoff committee selected one-loss SEC champion Alabama over undefeated ACC champion Florida State for the CFP. Anarchy ensued.

“We knew from the beginning there were five conference and four spots,” Kelly said on Tuesday. “If you did the math, you just needed to look at the five conference champions and say there were four slots.”

Kelley and Tigers played both clubs this season. On Sept. 3, Florida State beat LSU 45-24, then the Tigers lost to Alabama 42-28 on Nov. 4.

“Two outstanding football teams, but the two football teams were different at the end of the season than they were at the beginning.

“From my perspective, unfortunately, Florida State was not the same team earlier in the year than they were later in the year because of the injury to the quarterback. Look, you can take that for whatever you want, but if only four of the conference championship teams can go and there’s five, you’re splitting hairs because they are all great teams.”

Kelly said he understood why the committee decided what it did.

“If you’re going to sit one of them out, maybe it’s got to be the one that lost their quarterback.”

The debate over the committee’s decision hasn’t stopped since Sunday.

Booger McFarland said he would “go to my grave” defending Florida State, while NBC Sports’ Dan Patrick wondered if the ACC was really a Power 5 conference.

Meanwhile, SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum and CNN’s Kaitlan Collins went on offensive against anti-Alabama CFP talk.

Florida Senator Rick Scott and other state politicians demanded CFP committee chairman Boo Corrigan answer for the “corrupt” FSU decision.

Deion Sanders said the decision was “business,” and Alabama’s Nick Saban wasn’t going to be denied.

Stephen A. Smith contends Florida State would be in CFP if Deion Sanders was coach.

Donald Trump blamed Florida’s Ron DeSantis for a “bad lobbying effort” for Florida State’s CFP exclusion.
